The Lagos State Government has taken swift action against two residents who were caught disposing of trash in floodwater in the Ijesha community of the Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area.
This was confirmed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday.
The incident came to light after a photo shared on social media showed a man and a woman rolling a trash drum into the flooded street.
The user, identified as #Adetutuadeoye3, alleged that the individuals were throwing their waste into the floodwater.
She wrote, “These people just poured out their waste in the floodwater. This is at No. 2 Akewukewe Street, beside Ikate Local Government in Ijesha Surulere.”
Responding to the post, Commissioner Wahab acknowledged the issue, stating, “Thank you for bringing it to our attention. @muyiwag @lawma_gov, please take note.”
Wahab further reported that the building in question had been identified and subsequently locked by the Environmental Health Service Department of Itire-Ikate LCDA.
He stated, “The house has been identified and locked immediately by the Environmental Health Service Department of Itire-Ikate LCDA.”
Earlier reports from PUNCH highlighted that several areas in Lagos, including Iyana-Oworo, Oshodi, and Lagos Island, were severely affected by floods, bringing activities to a halt.
Videos and pictures posted online depicted the extensive flooding in various parts of Lagos on Wednesday morning.
