Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, declared on Friday that the ascension of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland is a testament to the enduring and resilient spirit of Ibadan.
He emphasized that Oba Olakulehin’s coronation has silenced those who sought to sow division within Ibadan, now extending the crown to Ibadan North-East and Ona-Ara.
Makinde made these remarks at the historic Mapo Hall during the elaborate event organized by the state, attended by dignitaries across Nigeria.
He stated, “This has again demonstrated that Ibadanland and the people of Ibadan can be resilient. Those who have been focusing on the things that divide us have now been put to shame.
I want to greet the Kabiyesi and pray that God will grant you long life to reign for a long time on the throne.”
“By the power conferred upon me as the Governor by sub-sections (1) and (2) of Section 20 of the Chiefs Law Cap 28 Vol.1 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000, I hereby present the Instrument/Staff of Office, which symbolises your authority as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.”
Earlier, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by Minister of Power Chief Bayo Adelabu praised the governor for respecting traditional rules in the monarch’s appointment.
Tinubu highlighted the enduring tradition and resilience of the Ibadan monarchy, noting the ceremony as a milestone in Yorubaland’s history.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, also present, congratulated the new Olubadan and commended Governor Makinde for ushering in a new era.
The event, overseen by Secretary to the State Government Prof Olanike Adeyemo, celebrated Ibadan’s cultural legacy, with Ademola Ojo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, thanking Makinde for his commitment to preserving and promoting Ibadan’s heritage.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Olakulehin thanked Governor Makinde for steadfast support and expressed gratitude to all attendees at the coronation, including dignitaries from across Nigeria.
