The Nigeria Police Force has declared its readiness to confront protesters who cause trouble during the planned August 1st hunger protest in Oyo State.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr. Ayodele Sonubi, addressed journalists during their monthly congress at Dapo Aderogba Hall, NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
He urged protesters to conduct themselves orderly and warned them not to test the patience of the policemen deployed for their security.
The commissioner emphasized that, while citizens have the constitutional right to express their grievances through peaceful protests, anyone planning to disrupt or incite violence will face severe consequences.
According to him, “during the EndSARS protest, police were at the receiving end. This time, we have been too lenient. Our patience is over; we will not tolerate any act of violence during this protest,” the statement read.
“The purpose of a protest is to raise awareness and call on the government to address general concerns, not to cause destruction. Destructive actions lead to anarchy, chaos, and ultimately, sorrow, tears, and blood.”
Sonubi also urged journalists to verify incidents with the police public relations officer to avoid spreading fake news, which could incite violence during the protest.
