There is growing concern among labor leaders due to the delayed release of the adjustment template for implementing the new minimum wage. This wage was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on July 29.

Earlier in June, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Minister of National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, presented the cost implications of the new national minimum wage to President Tinubu.

Despite the approval of the wage increase on July 29, the federal government has not yet communicated the necessary template for the payment structure adjustments, leading to anxiety among workers.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have expressed their frustration, urging the federal and state governments to expedite the release of the template.

The TUC’s Deputy President, Comrade Tommy Etim Okon, emphasized that they have repeatedly asked the government for the template, highlighting the importance of this step in addressing the economic challenges faced by workers.

The NLC, through its Head of Information and Public Relations, Benson Upah, also voiced disappointment over the delay, noting that they expected the implementation process to have started by now.

Both organizations are calling for immediate action to ensure that the new minimum wage is implemented without further delays.

In response to these concerns, a representative from the Federal Ministry of Finance stated that the necessary work on the new minimum wage has been done, and efforts are ongoing to implement it soon.

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has also raised concerns, warning that the new N70,000 minimum wage could lead to job losses for some small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggling to meet the new requirements.

Despite these challenges, several states, including Edo, Adamawa, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Benue, Nasarawa, and Borno, have indicated their readiness to implement the agreed wage increase.

Labor leaders continue to urge the government to act swiftly, emphasizing the importance of timely implementation to support workers and improve their standard of living.
