The Nigeria Police Force has detained 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as the Shi’ite group, following a clash with the group in Abuja on Sunday. The detained individuals are set for prosecution.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the clash resulted in the death of two policemen, with three others sustaining serious injuries.
Additionally, three patrol vehicles were set ablaze by the Shi’ites during the altercation.
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, credited credible intelligence reports for the successful apprehension of the suspects.
He noted that the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has directed that the matter be pursued to its conclusion.
Adejobi emphasized that the I-G reaffirmed the force’s commitment to arresting all those involved in the attack and ensuring they are brought to justice.
The I-G also stated his resolve to resist any form of anarchy and unrest across the country while pledging to maintain law and order nationwide.
He condemned the unprovoked killings of police officers, calling them outrageous and unacceptable, stressing that those responsible have “murdered peace.”
Adejobi added that as investigations progress, the Nigeria Police Force is determined to fully uncover the extent of the attack and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Inspector-General extended his sympathies to the grieving families of the fallen officers and wished a speedy recovery to those currently undergoing treatment.
He also called on the public to support the police in their efforts to maintain law and order, especially in the face of extremist threats and other violent crimes.
