Women journalists need to diversify into entrepreneurship and involve themselves in politics to secure their retirement life.
This was the submission of guest speakers at the NAWOJ B Zone South West Zonal Summit in Lagos.
One of the speakers, Mrs. Victoria Ibanga, Publisher of Next Edition News Online, urged women journalists to take up leadership roles and contribute to good governance to remain relevant after retirement.
Mrs. Ibanga emphasized the importance of media organizations ensuring positive and diverse representations of women in leadership to change public perceptions and inspire them to pursue their dreams.
Another guest speaker, entrepreneur Mrs. Bola Okoli, encouraged women journalists to explore business opportunities after leaving office, stating that it is never too late to start.
Mrs. Okoli also called for the eradication of fake content creators on social media to protect the good work of female journalists.
The summit, themed “Empowering Women: Driving Good Governance and Economic Growth,” was lauded by the Father of the Day, the Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Ademola, who was represented by Alhaji Olanrewaju Bakare.
In her keynote address, the National Vice Chairperson, B Zone, Comrade Adeola Adekunle, highlighted the importance of equipping women with tools and resources to thrive, saying NAWOJ offers workshops on leadership skills, financial literacy, and business navigation.
Lagos State Chairperson Dr. Adeola Ekine described the theme of the summit as a call to action, stressing that empowering women is crucial to achieving sustainable development goals.
The summit was attended by notable figures, including former NAWOJ President Mrs. Toro Oladapo, Yeye Ifeyinwa Omowole, NUJ Lagos Chairman Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, as well as his counterparts from Oyo and Ogun, and NAWOJ B-Zone Chairpersons and Secretaries from Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states.
