The Olubadan-elect of Ibadanland, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has described his emergence as the 44th Olubadan as a divine arrangement, noting that his path to the revered throne has been “bumpy, filled with trials, yet orchestrated by grace.”
Speaking for the first time since his official nomination, the former governor of Oyo State said the news of his predecessor’s passing, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, came as a rude shock, adding that he never imagined destiny would call him at this moment.
“When I heard about the transition of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, it was a rude shock. I never thought the throne would come my way at this time,” he said while addressing well-wishers at his Ondo Street residence in Bodija, Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja paid a glowing tribute to the late Olubadan, describing him as a monarch who upheld Ibadan’s customs with dignity. He extended condolences to the Olubadan-in-Council, the royal family, and all Ibadan indigenes.
Reflecting on his journey, he recalled being installed as Jagun Balogun of Ibadanland on October 1, 1993 a position that marked the beginning of his rise through the 36-rung hierarchy of the Ibadan chieftaincy system, one of the most organized in Yorubaland.
“It has been a journey of patience, perseverance, and divine favor. Many who began this path with me are no longer alive,” he said, his voice laden with emotion.
The Olubadan-elect noted that upon returning from a two-month trip, his first stop was his ancestral home in Isale-Osi, Ibadan South-West LGA, where his traditional journey began over three decades ago.
He reminisced about his Jagun installation, graced by late political icons like Chief MKO Abiola, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, and Governor Kolapo Ishola.
“I was born in 1944, and now I am the 44th Olubadan. This is not a coincidence—it is destiny,” he declared.
Oba Ladoja expressed gratitude to the Olubadan-in-Council for their unanimous endorsement of his nomination.
“If they hadn’t approved me, what could I have done? All 10 members gave their support, and I’m deeply grateful,” he said, promising to work closely with the council.
He further disclosed plans to consult with the Oyo State Governor, the Oluwo, the Araba of Ibadan, and other traditional authorities ahead of his coronation.
Concluding his address, Oba Ladoja sought prayers from the people of Ibadan.
“I seek your prayers for wisdom and understanding. This is a sacred responsibility, and I trust God to grant me the grace to lead Ibadanland in peace, fairness, and progress.”
