The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the ban on unregulated commercial bus operations, specifically “Danfos” and “Koropes” along the Lekki-Epe corridor, starting from October 1, 2024.

Dispelling speculations of a suspension, State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, emphasized that the move aligns with the Lagos State Strategic Transportation Master Plan.

They urged cooperation from Public Transport Bus Operators, highlighting a stakeholders’ meeting held earlier to discuss compliance and the restructuring plans aimed at enhancing commuting experiences.

Giwa described the current bus operations along the corridor as chaotic and stressed the necessity of integrating the informal transport sector into the State’s Bus Reform Initiative.

He outlined strategic measures such as restructuring operations, deploying high-capacity buses, implementing an e-ticketing system, and enhancing transport infrastructure.

Giwa announced a phased implementation of the restructuring plan, urging operators to register with the Ministry of Transportation within the next two weeks to ensure adherence to new regulations.

He warned of fines and vehicle forfeitures for non-compliance, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforcing transport reforms.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olawale Musa, assured support from unions in identifying and sanctioning unregistered operators along the corridor, which serves as a pilot test for standardized transportation systems in Lagos.

In addition, the Lagos State Government announced the introduction of an e-call up system for managing truck movements within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor from August 1, 2024.

This digital platform aims to streamline truck access to industrial areas, ensuring efficient logistics and reducing traffic congestion.

Giwa urged truck operators to comply with the new system, highlighting its role in supporting economic activities at key industrial hubs like the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery.

The initiatives underscore Lagos State’s efforts towards sustainable development and improved urban transport management in one of Nigeria’s crucial economic zones.
