Dr. Akin Fagbemi, Chairman of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, has called on the striking nurses in the state to end their strike, highlighting the efforts of Governor Oluseyi Makinde in addressing workers’ concerns.
During an interview at his office at the state secretariat, Agodi Ibadan, Dr. Fagbemi emphasized, “the demands of the striking nurses are purely administrative, which is within the power of the state government to address. His Excellency has given directives regarding their demands.”
Key issues raised by the nurses include recruitment, which the government addressed in 2020 by hiring health workers and issuing directives to fill vacancies within the board.
Dr. Fagbemi noted that advertisements for recruitment have been made publicly available, aiming to bring in competent professionals across various categories, including doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and physiotherapists.
Dr. Fagbemi mentioned ongoing discussions with the chairman of the nurses and midwives union, highlighting the positive steps taken by the state government.
He urged the striking nurses to reconsider their stance, pointing to the efforts of other health workers who have been working tirelessly to cover the gaps created by the strike.
“I appeal to the striking nurses to call off the strike in the interest of the entire populace of the state. The executive governor of the state, Engr Oluseyi Makinde, has been very magnanimous in responding to all government workers’ issues in the state, including the nurses,” he stated.
The chairman commended the Commissioner for Health, permanent secretaries of the ministry and board, the Head of Service, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labor Matters for their efforts in resolving the strike.
He emphasized that recruitment is an ongoing process and assured that the board would address the gaps in the hospitals before the end of the year.
