A group of protesters on Monday stormed the headquarters of the National Medical Services Laboratories (NMS Labs) in Pennsylvania, USA, demanding clarification on the outcome of a toxicology test reportedly conducted to determine the cause of death of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Taiwo Odumosu, a member of the Aloba family’s legal team, disclosed this to PUNCH Online on Wednesday.

The protesters revealing that the US-based lab refuted the Lagos State Government’s claim that the toxicology test was conducted at its facility.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, had stated in a live telephone call with Ahmad Isah, the anchor of the Abuja-based online program Brekete Family, that the toxicology test was being conducted at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA.

This statement was made sometime in February 2024.

However, on May 15, a pathologist testifying before the Coroner’s Court revealed that an autopsy could not determine Mohbad’s cause of death due to the decomposition of his body.

Responding to an inquiry on May 17, Esther Dede, the Client Services Associate for the Forensics Division at NMS Labs, stated, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient.”

The family’s legal team alleged discrepancies regarding the involvement of NMS Labs, noting that the letterhead and address of the facility appeared on the toxicology report despite conflicting statements from the laboratory about their role in the testing process.

The protesters demanded clarification on the lab’s involvement amidst these conflicting reports and growing public concern over the integrity of the test results.
