Prominent leaders, traditional rulers and stakeholders in Oke Ogun have called on youths in the region to take a more active role in politics and community development as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The call was made during the 6th Annual Get-Together of the Oke Ogun Indigenous Youths Solidarity Forum held at the Igboho City Hall under the auspices of the Alepata of Igboho, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. Joel Olalere Olawuwo.
Speaking on the theme, “Oke Ogun Youths: Transforming Our Heritage Through Active Participation in Elections and Community Development,” the speakers stressed that the future of the region depends largely on the willingness of its youths to participate actively in the democratic process and contribute meaningfully to community development.
They maintained that greater political participation by young people would promote inclusive governance, strengthen democratic institutions and accelerate socio-economic development across Oke Ogun.
The speakers also urged youths to unite in pursuit of the region’s common interests, noting that Oke Ogun is on a path of self-discovery, recovery and renewed development that requires the commitment of its younger generation.
Hon. Ayo Ayokunle, Mr. Olushola Babalola and Prince Adebowale Falana emphasized the need to awaken the civic consciousness of young people by encouraging them to participate in electoral processes, engage in leadership and develop their talents for the benefit of their communities.
They further warned against vote buying and other electoral malpractices, advising youths to support candidates based on integrity, competence and proven character rather than financial inducements.
Delivering the guest lecture, Hon. Ayokunle highlighted the importance of community engagement and moral values, expressing concern over the gradual erosion of Yoruba culture and traditions.
He called for renewed efforts to preserve indigenous languages, communal values and respect for cultural heritage, describing them as essential pillars for sustainable development and responsible leadership.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to deserving personalities in recognition of their contributions to the development of Oke Ogun. Recipients included the Vice Chancellor of FUNATO, Okeho, Prof. Babayemi Olaniyi Jacob; Chief Adegbenro Bright Ajibade; Ambassador Dr. Agnes Ajibade, who received an award on behalf of Mrs. Shade Oyelame; and Chief Taiwo Ojeniyi, who represented Hon. Kola Olabiyi.
Responding on behalf of the award recipients, the honourees appreciated the organisers for the recognition and encouraged Oke Ogun youths to remain proactive in community development while embracing unity and constructive political participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
