President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, in a move aimed at improving troop welfare and boosting morale.
The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the country.
Under the approved package, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The salary review will raise the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from N660 billion to N924 billion, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the welfare of military personnel.
President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s appreciation of the sacrifices made daily by members of the Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
According to the President, the men and women defending Nigeria deserve adequate support and recognition for their dedication to national service.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare while continuing to modernise the Armed Forces through the provision of improved weapons, equipment and advanced technology to enhance operational effectiveness.
Tinubu stressed that national security remains the foundation for sustainable development, adding that his government will continue to deploy every available military and law enforcement resource to safeguard lives and property.
He also urged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s gratitude for their service and a motivation to remain steadfast in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
The President expressed confidence that, with sustained government support and the commitment of security personnel, Nigeria would overcome the security challenges confronting the country.
