In celebration of International Youth Day, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for a stronger focus on digitally empowering young people.
Ms. Christian Munduate, UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, highlighted the vital role of youth in utilizing digital technology to create a sustainable and inclusive future within a harmonious global community.
Addressing an event in Lagos on August 12, 2024, under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” Munduate urged Nigerian political leaders to harness the transformative potential of youth-driven digital innovation.
She appealed to partners, stakeholders, and decision-makers to prioritize support for young people.
“It’s a matter of urgency. Despite Nigeria’s large youth population, their needs—especially in education—are not being fully met,” Munduate emphasized.
She suggested that governments at all levels can accelerate youth development through technological advancement.
UNICEF remains committed to engaging young people aged 10-24 through a new initiative that enhances their learning skills and prepares them for future challenges.
Since its launch in 2018, this program has aimed to reach 20 million youths, with about 6.2 million already participating and gaining opportunities online.
Munduate noted that youths are leading the charge in the digital revolution, using technology to drive progress and foster a more inclusive and sustainable world.
She underscored that technology is crucial for bridging educational gaps and preparing young people to take full advantage of available opportunities.
“There is a pressing need for development in Nigeria, and this can be achieved if the youth are adequately prepared to engage with emerging opportunities,” Munduate stated.
“Young people are the torchbearers of sustainable development, and technology plays a central role in their education and success in the current digital and industrial revolution,” she concluded.
