The Plateau State Government expresses deep sadness over a tragic school building collapse in Jos, the state capital, on Friday.
According to reports, 22 persons have been confirmed dead and over 132 injured at the collaped Saint Academy building in the Busa Buji community.
The collapse occurred around 8:30 am while students and teachers were in class. The state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, provided an update, stating that efforts are underway to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
Ashoms emphasized the government’s commitment to providing medical care without upfront payment for the injured.
He also highlighted the need for strict adherence to safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, Sunday Àbdu, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the casualty figures and described the incident as tragic. Rescue operations are ongoing as victims continue to be evacuated to hospitals across Jos.
The government has urged schools with structural issues to close temporarily to prevent similar tragedies, underscoring the importance of Executive Order 003 on safety standards.
