Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluwaseyi Makinde has taken a decisive stance on the Supreme Court’s judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments in Nigeria, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to protecting the people of the state from any adverse effects of the ruling.
Speaking at an Advisory/Consultative Committee Meeting involving stakeholders in the local government system held at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan today.
Makinde expressed concerns about potential challenges arising from the judgment. He underscored the need for proactive measures to ensure a seamless implementation that safeguards the interests of Oyo State residents.
According to him, “I called this meeting because I believe a gap has been created between the Supreme Court decision and the Nigerian Constitution.
We must seek solutions that promote transparency and prevent undue hardship on our people.”
Highlighting his administration’s efforts in local governance, Governor Makinde mentioned clearing salary backlogs, addressing infrastructure deficits, and enhancing healthcare and educational facilities across the state.
He acknowledged ongoing challenges, including outstanding pension and gratuity payments.
The meeting, brought together council chairmen, union leaders including NULGE, NUT, NUP, NLC, TUC, and representatives from relevant state agencies.
Governor Makinde announced the formation of two committees tasked with reviewing the Supreme Court verdict and proposing strategies to mitigate its negative impacts, He conluded.
Hon. Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, outlined that the committees have a timeframe of four to six weeks to devise strategies tailored to Oyo State’s unique circumstances.
The Attorney-General of Oyo State, Barr. Biodun Aikomo, commended the governor’s proactive approach, emphasizing its potential to preempt crisis and foster development in the state.
