The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government. Sources within ASUU’s National Executive Council confirmed the development in Abuja on Monday.
The notice, given at the end of an NEC meeting held at the University of Ibadan, will be formally sent to the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education.
“It is not an ultimatum but a strike notice. We are providing a 21-day notice before commencing the strike, in line with labour laws,” a source explained.
ASUU had previously threatened strike action over unfulfilled agreements with the federal government. On June 26, Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman invited ASUU to discuss unresolved issues.
However, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke stated that the agreements reached had not been implemented.
Osodeke noted that the government had failed to act on the 2009 re-negotiated agreements for over six years, and academic allowances owed to members remain unpaid.
Additionally, there is concern over the inadequate revitalization fund, with only one of the agreed payments made since 2013.
The ASUU president also criticized the unchecked proliferation of universities, highlighting the lack of funding for newly approved institutions.
